I have been married for over fifteen years. My husband is slightly older than me and we share many interests. We love good movies, sci-fi and dogs. There are a couple of areas we don't- he loves sports and 'graphic novels' (comics). He has been an avid comic book collector for years. He spent a lot of time carefully placing each precious comic in a bag with a backing board and then into a special long or short box. I was fed up when the waterproof basement (furnished with industrial steel shelves), the 'dining room' and all of my bookshelves (they were a Mother's Day gift to me!) were overflowing and I had to rent a storage locker. The collection expanded to include various elated action figures. He justified the purchases as 'investments'. I saw them as a waste of money and space. This was a rift much like the one referenced in Cardiff on Torchwood.
Things changed when I realized we could actually turned this massive collection into an actual business. I had always dreamed about having my own business but lacked the a) confidence, b)desire for a secure job with benefits and c)an actual business idea. Now I look at things in a different light. I continued working my job but would combine his comic knowledge and my entrepreneurial desires to create a small online business. His "comic clutter" soon took the form of serious inventory. Enough to supply small comic book store. While this is my business, my key expert and buyer is my husband Mark. He can fulfill his desire to research and purchase and I can truly see this as an investment to the business-our business. Even our son is part of the venture.
